Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that offers financial support to people in the construction trade who are living with life-altering injuries. Once a year the organization honors numerous recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was happy to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil experienced a massive stroke at at the age of 48. He lost the function of his left arm and the experience left his left leg majorly impaired, causing foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors feared that he would eventually be restricted to a wheelchair.

Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their lone source of income, resulting in financial pressure on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. Their spirits were lifted when Adil was introduced to the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that uses functional electrical stimulation to help someone in Adil’s situation walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila were not able to afford the equipment in addition to the extensive rehab that would be required so he could learn how to use it.

Fortunately, an employee at WalkAid told Adil and Laila about the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the incredible grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
